TP Rawks 2011

Welcome to our annual TPRawks!

TPRawks is part of an outreach program by Temasek Polytechnic to attract secondary school graduates. An annual event which is eagerly awaited.

This year, Digital Forensic (DFS) and Cyber Digital Security (CDS) have designed our very own games for the Rawkers to try out as part of our course introduction!

Settle down Rawkers! Get a seat, don’t be shy (:

Our game master explaining the game to the Rawkers.

Hmm, seem like they need to find a matching fingerprint ;) CSI in TP huh?

More about the two courses

Cyber Digital Security

Many have misconception about this course, Cyber Digital Security (CDS) does NOT train hackers but we train security professionals. Four main aspects of the course are namely, ethical hacking, security audit, secure programming and system network security.

Ethical hacking teaches students the various types of hacking methods and how to prevent them.

Security audit teaches student how to test the vulnerability of a security system.

Secure programming teaches student how to write safe and secured codes.

System network security teaches student how to configure a safe network.

CDS has always been a distinguished course in Temasek Polytechnic, it is recognised for its competency in producing good quality IT Security students.  Its students have won several competitions both regional and international.

Digital Forensics

Temasek Polytechnic is the first and only polytechnic in Singapore to offere a full-time diploma in Digital Forensics. The Singapore government is actively developing expertise in Digital Forensics.  People with Digital Forensics skills are able to locate, retrieve and analyse data from various storage media such as hard disk, thumb drives and even mobile phones as well as live data from the internet. The data retrieved are analysed and used as evidence to support both civil and criminial investigations.  A vital technology which will help rival increasing high-tech crimes.

Being the first diploma in Singapore, high expectations have been placed on this course. Students have the course to be both challenging and interesting.

We are in the news

This was published in the Straits Times on 29 October 2011.  Temasek Polytechnic is one of the 3 tertiary institutions, apart from NUS and SMU, to have collaborations with Singapore Infocomm Technology Security Authority.  As a result, a Centre for Digital Security & Investigations will be set up in the School of Informatics & IT.  Students from both Diploma in Digital Forensics and Diploma in Cyber & Digital Security would benefit from the facilities and industry collaborations.

Rest Your Stress Talk

Hi everyone again! On Racial Harmony Day (21st July), we had a talk about stress management right? Do you all like it? Okay I know the answer is no but it’s actually helpful so let’s revise the tips! :-)

Stress Management Tips:
  1. Jogging, walking, swimming, cyling, stretching
  2. Get your muscles to relax – palm your eyes and warm your face
  3. Clear your room, desk, wardrobe
  4. Indulge in your own interest (sun and sea)
  5. Watch a humorous movie
  6. Breathing and relaxation exercise
Priority Management Tips

  1. Use I-U Matrix to prioritise tasks
  2. Divide large tasks into smaller tasks
  3. Eat the frog first – do the most difficult task at the most productive time of the day (http://www.eatthatfrogmovie.com/)
Overcome Procrastination

  1. Overcome lack of confidence through review and practices
  2. Overcome overwhelmness by dividing tasks into manageable size
  3. Overcome lack of motivation by resetting goal and purpose
  4. Play first or later is a choice – choose the one that is safer
Accept Changes in Life, manage your own expectation

  1. Some things are not in your control, so don’t expect to change them
  2. Adjust and make more realistic expectations
Talk it out with someone – family, friends, CP, Counselors
  1. Don’t keep to yourselves, find support when needed, we are not superman or wonder woman
Last but not least, you cannot control what happens to you, but you can control your attitude towards it! :-)

So take things easy~ Jiayou jiayou everyone! :-)

BOG Lecture

Hi Hi, everyone again!!:) Remember the BOG lecture on Tuesday and the four points?

The Speaker is Mr Alex Siow, the first CIO in Singapore. He’s a very candid speaker. He shared about his life etc. He also shared about 4 points. So now, let’s see the pictures!

Leading, Governing, Investing and Managing!

Anyway we were the only freshman invited to the lecture as we are the first batch so we do not have anyone in the director’s list. So let’s take the chance to relate it DFS!

Lead by creating a vision of everyone graduating together!

Govern by establishing the foundation and structure for the next batch and the future batches of DFS!

Invest by shaping the DFS portfolio!

Manage by managing DFS! (Sorry for the managing part because I didn’t managed to write down the part whereby Mr Siow was talking about it as he moved on to the next slide already.

Last but not least, there’s one sentence which Mr Siow said that was unforgettable. He said that the way to have good social interpersonal skills is to give and take. You cannot just keep giving and don’t take and you also cannot just keep taking and don’t give. This is very true, isn’t it?

Okay, that's all for the BOG lecture! :-)
Jiayou everyone! :-)

DFS Seminar

Hi everyone! Sorry for the late update on the DFS Seminar!

There were in total four speakers for the DFS Seminar. There were guests from Singapore Police Force, Interpol as well as our very own TP graduate Hamzah who was an intern in Interpol.

Our speakers from SPF and Interpol talked about the rising cyber crimes in the world such that the demand for cyber defenders is getting higher.

A question about how to differentiate the higher and lower standards of criminals was asked. The answer from the SPF Superintendent was that those criminals who are caught thought that they could get away but actually they always left traces that could incriminate them and for those really higher standards criminals, they were never caught so their existence may not even be known. Therefore, it’s up to us to catch those higher standard criminals!

I don’t expect the world to be free of crimes but I believe that it could be done somehow! :-)

Anyway the best part of the DFS Seminar was towards the end of the seminar and after the seminar.

After the Seminar, we, the event helpers from C300 & C301, talked to Mr David and the whole conversation was GREAT! :-) It started by Mr David telling us how he managed to crack the code that I posted on face book and then he continued to tell us about the ways to decode a code.

Like example, RXNNBN, who knows what is that? If I tell you it’s NOT a country, then do you know what is it? Give you all a hint: Use frequency distribution! For eg, ‘E’ is the most common alphabet in a word.

Then Hamzah, the person who went for the internship in Interpol, came and talked to us and Mr David also. And do you all know that the only department in Interpol that does investigation is Financial and High-tech Crimes? Interpol doesn’t do investigation but they have one and only department in Interpol that does investigation! So cool right?

We talked for almost an hour. It was really a great conversation though I was the only girl left :-)

Here are some photos that we took!

The event helpers from C301!
Anyway that’s all for the DFS Seminar!

Jiayou everyone! :-)

Internet Landscape

Finally, term break when we have time to sit and reflect. Here are the latest statistics and the most comprehensive so far.  The heatmap doesn't show it very clearly but most attacks are from Taiwan which is also shown in "Top 10 Malware vs Top 10 Source Location" graph.

There is a clear correlation between number of attacks and binaries downloaded and most are targetted towards Windows machines.

Top 10 malware are all variants of Conflicker worm... must do research on why.

CCN Day

Hey People! Sorry for the late posts! I’ll be doing the part on the Campus Care Network (CCN) Day!

Now that the term tests are over (I’m sure we did pretty okay for our first tests in TP), it’s time to have fun as we have 2 weeks of break! Well… it isn’t a break if we’re bogged down by projects, workshops and assignments now is it? Well, it’s still a break for us to rest and recover!Okay! Now back to the main topic! CCN Day was fun as it was the first time most of us were involved in a project since project work in our lower secondary years. It put to test our creativity, marketing and sales pitching skills as both classes strived to make a profit.

From what I heard, C301 spent quite a bit on the coffee machine, cakes, apple crumbles and other things. C300 also spent much on their materials, buying the many bags gummy bears, rolls of mentos and the jars. But in the end, everyone made a profit and that’s what counts! =D Now on to the pictures!

C301's poster

Wow! These look yummy! :D

That’s all for now people! Till the next event! 

A big Welcome to DFS!!

We are back here again. The LONG awaited post is UP now! DFS orientation and Get together day (DFS +CDS)! C300 will be ON DUTY for this semester. Enjoy our update~~=) Now, I have to split it into 2 parts in this entry due to too many pictures.
Firstly, let’s welcome our fresh batch of Digital Forensics. Welcome you all!!And not forgetting myself!!=D
Let’s start with our FRESHMEN Orientation. Refresh our moments with Strangers and now becoming friends. Are you ready? Are you all excited with our post? It must be your heart telling you: Nah. Not interesting at all. So boring.” Don’t feel this way, I’ll do all my best to keep this more alive.
Our first stay over at Temasek Polytechnic was indeed a very MEMORABLE experience. Even though it was actually our first day of school, we managed to make a good number of friends when we arrived. & Not forgetting THAT NIGHT. It was eventually a very tiring night. We had a FUN FILLED experience during the night walk. Don’t you agree that that we bonded with our classes ‘VERY WELL’? & our trustable OLs (Orientation Leaders) were smart enough to make us watch horror movies before bringing us for the night walk. Well, it wasn’t really a NIGHT WALK but a MINI HORROR HOUSE! We did have some SCARED classmates who screamed their lungs out. Err ... Because OLs were dressed as GHOST S?? HAHAHAHS! However, we still appreciate the fact that our orientation leaders managed to keep the orientation an ALIVE & SUCCESSFUL one. Unfortunately, we are unable to take any photos T.T our hand phones were kept with OLs. Memories will be kept in our hearts, right?

2nd Event - Get Together Day

Moving on to our second section… Get Together day. This is the day; we get together with CDS and met our course manager to voice out our heartfelt words about our course. It means we can complain complain…
Look our course mates were doing BBQ-ing…Yummy…It’s so tempting...Feeling hungry? While looking at it without having it on your hands?Shall we have another BBQ day together, okey???

Day 2
Although we were really very tired but we never failed to participate the MASS DANCE..On the floor~~
Last but not least, our last activities of the day. DRAGON BOAT~~~Row and Row….
On the second day of orientation, at 12 plus, those who volunteered for the dragon boat competition were asked to assemble outside the sports complex and were handpicked by the seniors to row. Although eventually we didn’t win anything, the experience and bonding was a better prize than the physical win! Here is our DFS class…
