The Spirit of DFS

It was a last minute call to form a team for IIT Sports League.  The Juniors got together and gave their best.  Their friends came to give support.  It was a close fight... we lost.  Actually we came in 2nd.  The team played a clean match and they had fun.  For that I am most proud.
Well done!!!

OSIP opportunity to KCT Japan

Memories of KCT

Lee Trina & Nur Syakirah, Temasek Polytechnic, Singapore
Throughout the three months that we have spent here in Japan, we have gained many enriching experiences. Being given the chance to conduct our research in KCT, we got the opportunity to work with students and staff who are also conducting similar research.

Sharing our research topics with one another has helped us gain valuable knowledge regarding the work that we are currently doing.

Furthermore, we were given the chance to attend academic workshops, exhibitions as well as university and factory tours that provided us with useful insights on the university and working life in Japan. We got to visit many iconic sights as well, most of which we do not have back in Singapore and this has given us many new experiences to cherish.

We have had the privilege of meeting many people from different walks of life during our stay here in Japan. Not only were we able to make many new Japanese friends, we also got to befriend many foreign students from different countries. Thus, it has taught us the importance of being open-minded and understanding towards the different cultures. We are really thankful for all the new friendships that we have forged while in Japan.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to President Tsukamoto, Professor Wakiyama, Miyamoto Sensei, Ishii Sensei, Indo Sensei, the dormitory staff and all the friends that we have made for making our stay here in Japan a very enjoyable and memorable one. We leave Japan with nothing but good memories. 皆さんのことを一生忘れません。また皆さんとお会いができるよう願っています。ありがとうございます。

SINGAPORE - Singapore's Cyber-Watch Centre is being upgraded to include more detection capabilities to counter increasing threats against government systems.
By January next year, the centre will be able to track unauthorised changes to websites and network traffic to detect malicious files and potential data leakages. The enhancement follows a wave of cyber attacks against government websites last year.
"This upgrade will allow us to better monitor government websites and inspect if there are malicious activities, which could affect access to online public services," said Communications and Information Minister Yaacob Ibrahim.
He was speaking this morning at the Infocomm Security Seminar organised by the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) at Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre.
At the same time, work is underway to raise the level of cybersecurity expertise here to boost the local workforce. IDA is getting tertiary institutions to include cybersecurity in the curriculum and have it as a specialist track in degree programmes.
For starters, the Singapore Institute of Technology will be launching Singapore'a first undergraduate Information Security degree programme in September next year.
The Nanyang Technological University has also included an information security specialisation programme as part of its undergraduate curriculum since the beginning of this month. More than 30 per cent of the final year cohort has opted for the programme.
"We need to grow Singapore's pool of Infocomm security experts and build their capabilities," said Dr Yaacob.
"The biggest growth in manpower requirements will be in the areas of security operations, security engineering and technology. Apart from dedicated cybersecurity experts, other professionals in areas like network engineering and application development are also needed in defending network infrastructure or applications from ever-increasing cyber threats."
The Cyber-Watch Centre was set up in 2007 to monitor critical public-sector IT installations round the clock. The centre is managed by Singapore-based security services provider e-Cop

June Holiday Activities (ALP) 18 June

June 18th, another holiday? Not this time around. The CDS and DFS freshmen got together and came back for a time of team building and bonding session with their year 1 classmates as they worked through obstacles together as a class and diploma. Here're some capture shots of the event and some thoughts by some of our students who attended this session.

"After going for ALP, I have learn that teamwork is very important. We played a few games and all the games requires us to work hard as a team together. " - Jing jing

"Through all this games I have learn that. In life we will face different types of challenges but with perseverance, we will be able to overcome all the obstacles." - Wesley

We like making new friends, allowing our social network to be wider. In any times of our life, when we need help from others, many would be there to give us a helping hand. - Class C353 Reflection

We are glad and proud  that all staff and students had a good learning experience and a time of team bonding at our very first ALP for Diploma in CDS and DFS!

Study trip to Iskandar - 11 Jun 2014

Earlier this month, we had 72 IIT students and 6 staff travel to Iskandar for a day trip to visit a company Celestica Electronics and the Malaysia Information Centre (IMIC). Amongst the students were 10 DFS juniors who went for the trip. Abigail, one of our 10 Juniors has written a reflection below to share with us a little more on what they did on the trip.

"This Wednesday, 11 June 2014, was probably another average weekday but it was the first time I went on a study trip with IIT School. The trip, which lasted for a day, took us around several flagship zones in Iskandar Malaysia.
To start off, we arrived at Celestica Electronics where we were given a short talk which introduced us to the company.

Also, we had a tour to view the company’s manufacturing process. In addition, a tour around Flagship B showed us places like LegoLand, Educity and PineWood Iskandar Malaysia Studios. Besides this, we were given a talk by a staff at Iskandar Malaysia Information Centre which gave us more background and information about how Iskandar Malaysia is developing and working towards being a strong and sustainable metropolis of international standing.

"Prior to the trip, I knew little about Iskandar Malaysia. Through the talks and tour, I have seen the developments and got to know how the Malaysian government is combining different facilities and services to attract investors. I am glad that I attended the trip which has exposed me to something new."
