Let's Do Digital Forensics
Exhibit 1: The Letters That Follow.....
- GIAC GCFA, GREM, GCIH, RHCE, CISSP, CISA, MCSE, CCNP, Ence, CCNA Security……
Clues: We searched the profiles of the lecturers, their facebooks, blogs, diploma website and noticed that they have a list of letters just like the above or logos like these following their names. What are these?
Analyse: Google and we found that these are industry’s recognition of the competencies demonstrated by a professional in a particular field. So, GIAC is Global Information Assurance Certification, GCFA is GIAC Certified Forensic Analyst, GREM is GIAC Reverse Engineering Malware. CISA is Certified Information System Auditor, and so the list goes on…
Conclusion: Be therefore assured that students will be trained by highly qualified and experienced lectures….and, students too have the opportunity to pursue some of the certifications! And some are sponsored! Great!
Exhibit 2: Papers Published like a Pro.....
Clues: We continued our search….the School of IIT website shows a photo about a lecturer – receiving an award from Spring Singapore. But wait, isn’t this the same lecturer who appeared in some other publications?
Examine: Oh…yes, found two @ http://www.itsc.org.sg/pdf/synthesis09/Two_Face_Biometric.pdf
http://lk.sun.com/sunnews/events/2009/openjive/photos/CDSTrio/gallery.jsp?page=2&image=24#gallery
Mr Lim Eyung, currently also in the Diploma in DFS, is also a Biometric expert (e.g. face, fingerprint identification and recognition) and wow, the diploma students under him too had a chance to be involved in research and had published paper, and won many competitions (heard that the team went on to win competitions at national and international level like APICTA!)
Conclusion: Excellent !! So students will get more than a diploma and be recognised in the industry even before they graduated.
Exhibit 3: News Article 1: What has IT, Psychology and Criminal Procedure got to do with one another?
Found. A digital news paper article which briefly talked about the course structure – IT, Psychology of Deviant Behaviour and Criminal Procedures.
Analyse: Yes! Psychology is taught too to understand the motivation of criminals committing crimes, and Criminal Procedure for court of law purpose.
Successful digital forensic analysts are highly skilled IT professionals. They are passionate about IT as the bits and bytes help them to unravel the truth...
Here s why:
- They know how the files are stored so that they can retrieve deleted data
- They know where, who and when data is transferred through the network by analysing the network traffic
- They know what malware is lurking in the systems, securely encrypt, decrypt, writing programmes to help them search and scan registries, files, logs etc to uncover the truth, and in case somehow hacked into the system, they will trace the source and work to close the security loophole.
Conclusion: So, you learn about IT, security, forensics, psychology and criminal procedures. Comprehensive !
Exhibit 4: Listen to What Industries said....
Found ! - More online news and articles.
No doubt about it -
Conclusion:
Clear demand for Digital Forensic Professionals!
Looking Forward!

Digital Forensics Seminar for O'level Students
Hello “O”Level students
You are invited to the Digital Forensics Seminar 2010 !
I am writing to you because I know you have probably heard about this exciting new Diploma in Digital Forensics at Temasek Polytechnic. This is the first and only such Diploma Course offered in a Polytechnic in Singapore. What is this course about? Why this course? Is it suitable for me? What will I be doing after this course? Can I go for further studies? Will there be scholarships available for this course? You must have lots of questions in your mind and we hope to provide you with the answers.
Well, Digital Forensics is about using computing and scientific analysis methods to extract and analyse digital data from various sources, be it from a computer, cell-phone, GPS device or even camera, for the purpose of finding clues or any digital evidence relating to a crime.
Sounds like CSI? Read on. . . . . .
Technology has become so integrated into our daily lives today. In many crime scenes today, law enforcement agencies no longer just rely on physical evidence. They also search for clues via digital evidence, e.g. an email, a digital image, an SMS, Facebook entries or blog entries that can be found related to the crime. Many criminals unwittingly leave such evidence behind.
When you delete a file, it is not really deleted and can be recovered. When you join a Facebook networking group, your preferences, whereabouts and friends can be traced. When you Google for information, your search records can be tracked. When you create a digital photo, the time, date, GPS location can also be recovered.
Hence, it becomes important for law enforcement agencies to rely on the expertise of Digital Forensics Investigators to handle and recover these various forms of evidence. Therefore, the demand for digital forensics investigators is on the rise. For example, in 2004, FBI only had four Computer Forensics Labs. To date, they have 16 regional Computer Forensics Labs, and the number is growing.
Another reason driving the demand for Digital Forensics Professionals is that Cyber Crime has become more rampant. Hackers are stealing information, causing many public and private companies much anxiety about defending their systems.
According to a recent Symantec survey, 66% of Singapore companies have experienced cyber attacks, causing them to lose huge amounts of money. A KPMG study found that technology-related frauds have also emerged as 'the fastest growing and most pervasive category of fraud' in the business world. In its 2004 survey, KPMG found that only 19% of fraud was computer-related. This rose to 59% in 2008, and each fraud set the company back by S$4.4 million. Isn’t that a lot of money? This is why many organisations like banks, financial institutions, government agencies, law enforcement agencies, audit firms, etc. are hiring Digital Forensics Professionals. It is a growing market and currently demand is far exceeding supply.
What is required of a good Digital Forensics Professional?
You need to be inquisitive, analytical, have a passion for ITand love the challenge of solving puzzles
You would need good knowledge of criminal procedures which the course will teach you
You need a basic knowledge of the psychology of the criminal profile which the course will also teach you
You need to have good English and Maths as you must be able to document and write reports on the evidence collected, while having good logical and critical thinking ability
Where can I study this? Where will I work? Which scholarships are available for me? etc. etc….
Good – if you have these questions in mind – Come on down and join us to learn and get answers and clarifications to your questions.
Come and listen to interesting topics about Digital Forensics. You will have a chance to listen to people who are working on real-life crime cases. You will also learn more about safety measures in the Cyberworld – Nope! not just firewall and antivirus software. . . . . . .
